May 2, 2018by Jenny Zhu
Your college dorm room is your home and your headquarters during your time in higher education. While you may be spending money on other essential items, such as textbooks, laptops, and notebooks, you’re also going to want to draw your attention to your dorm furnishings, such as bedding, storage and other pieces of furniture.

While it may not seem important at the time, if you’re not happy with the place you’re living, you’re not going to be happy in your everyday life since you’ll always be returning home to somewhere that doesn’t inspire you. Let’s explore everything you need to know to turn your college dorm into a home.
Using Tapestries
Hanging a tapestry on your wall is one of the best ways to bring new life and colour into a room and allow you to bring an edge of comfort into your dorm, rather than just staring at white walls. Tapestries are affordable, come in all different shapes and sizes and can be bought from countless outlets online; you’ve just got to find one you like.

Have a Clear Out
While on the subject of having lots of things, when you first go to move into your dorm, you may be living at home and you’ve got tons of stuff, some of which you might not have even used or looked at in several years.
Before packing everything that you own, have a proper clean out and get rid of all the stuff you no longer want or need. “Remember that dorm rooms are temporary and you’re bound to collect more belongings during your time in college, so you’ll need space for that,” explains Michelle Olson, a college counsellor at Admission Service and Academized.
Buy Thumbtacks and Pushpins
These thumbtacks and pushpins are easy to buy, and you can normally go to the supermarket and by a box of 100 of next to nothing. These are great for hanging up your tapestries, as well as posters, necklaces, jewelry, bags and all other kinds of things which maximises your storage space while giving your dorm walls texture and depth.

Use Pictures
Chances that are that you’ve got a tonne of pictures and photos from your life back home and all your friends and family that you’re going to miss. Why not get some printed off your phone or computer and put them in your dorm room? This is a great way to fill up some wall space and is a nice reminder of everybody back home.
Maximising Your Use of Space
One of the best lessons you’ll learn from living in a dorm room is how to utilise space; a skill that will stay with you for the rest of your life. This is a key point to remember, especially if you’re someone who has a lot of stuff.

“One of the most popular choices among students is buying a lofted bed. Not only does this allow you to gain more storage space where you’ll be able to keep all your belongings, you’ll also open up more space, perfect for cushions or even a cheap sofa where your friends can sit when you hang out,” shares Tom McDonald, a student writer for Essay Help and Essay Roo.
Check with the University/College
With some university or college dorms, they may have rules as to what you can and cannot bring, and it’s essential that you check to make sure that you’re not breaking any of these rules. Otherwise, your items may be removed.
This especially includes electric appliances, such as microwaves, mini-fridges, irons, and other potential safety and fire hazards. Always check to be on the safe side.
