Creating Your Hygge Happy Place

Absolutely Cozy. Comfortably Charming. Always Special. Hygge has become a design buzzword that’s been circulating around the industry for several years now, but what does it really mean?
Hygge (pronounced hue-guh) is the Danish practice of creating joy and coziness in life’s everyday moments. It’s an ethereal concept that’s more a state of mind than a product you can buy. It’s the acknowledgment of a feeling or moment – alone or with family and friends, in the comfort of your home our out – that can be ordinary or extraordinary, but always warms the soul.

There is no” Hygge How-To.”  It’s not a thing you can learn or buy.  The only way you can get it is to feel it. It requires consciousness, a certain mindfulness and the ability to enjoy the moment.
The Danes created hygge to survive the boredom, cold and dark of long Scandinavian winters (17 hours of darkness). The simple act of lighting candles, cuddling under a snuggly blanket with some homemade hot chocolate or joining friends for a comforting meal does wonders in the spirit-lifting department.

So, you may ask, with all this home decor buzz around hygge, how do I bring this feeling into my own home? First of all, change any of your winter season stress for a hygge happy lifestyle. Soften your space with lush fabrics like faux fur blankets and pillows to make your room feel warm and cozy. Mix in some natural woods – a little side table or lovely tray is all you need.  Display what makes you happy, and store the clutter.
Evoke that “AHHH” atmosphere with scented (or not) candles, and bring in fresh flowers or even interesting branches or evergreens from around your yard. Keep those winter blues at bay with friends, family and steaming cups of hot cocoa.
Now you’re ready to feel the hygge!
